Through the Mountain Pass evokes a sense of setting out on an epic journey. The mountains loom large in the distance; a passage through them must be negotiated before the destination is reached. Will the travellers be returning, or is it a search for new beginnings?

The piece provides an opportunity for developing sonorous tone and shaping of phrases. Independent entries from the different sections of the orchestra are a feature of the piece, requiring players to have good ensemble awareness. An organic dovetailing of major and minor tonalities makes for an appealing listening and playing experience.
